NZ Section New Speakers Contest – July 2010

The NZ Section New Speakers’ Competition was held in July. The three speakers were all excellent: Kevin Yap (Norske Skog Tasman) who described the novel approach that the Tasman mill took in addressing its need to produce hydrogen peroxide bleached pulp for its high brightness paper grades; Olivia Goh(CHH Pulp & Paper Kinleith) who described a project undertaken to reduce Kinleith’s steam costs by minimising the steam swings in the No.1 kraft batch mill; and Jo Spod (Norske Skog Tasman) who discussed the benefits of using a “Design of Experiments (DOE)” technique in a mill environment to solve an intermittent problem that Tasman’s PM3 winder was having with off-centre cores (OCC’s). The high standard of the presentations made it extremely difficult for the judges to decide on a winner with all three contestants being scored within one mark of each other. The winner was Jo Spod, who received a trophy, an educational grant and complimentary registration for the 2011 Appita Annual Conference to be held in Rotorua. Kevin and Olivia each received a cash prize as runners-up. The NZ Section would like to thank the evening’s principal sponsor, Beca AMEC, and supporting sponsors, Metso Paper, Omya Australia/NZ, Chemiplas NZ Ltd, Cleveland Process Automation Ltd and Evonik Degussa Peroxide Ltd.
